Taste of Earth

A look back at Crown Point’s 19th annual Taste of Earth dinner/auction benefit gala on August 19, 2017 . . .

Nearly 250 guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the lawn where Akron’s premier bartender, Ozzie, delighted guests with a martini bar and a specialty raspberry/gin cocktail.  Linda Shippy chaired the event for a second year and helped welcome guests on a picture-perfect evening.  Highlights of the evening included the following:

  • $79,500 in generous proceeds that will support a variety of Crown Point programs and services
  • Generous Sponsors who donated nearly $25,000 included: Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs; Kate I. Raymond DDS, Inc.; Environmental Design Group; Hemminger Construction Co.; GPD Group; Mary Anne Krejci; Merrill-Lynch; MidWest Interiors; Joe Nemeth; George and Linda Palko; Renaissance of Richfield/Bath; David and Mary Myers Tschantz; Libby Upton; Patricia Brubaker; Dr. Richard and Mary Beth Ellison; GOJO; Maynard Family Foundation; OMNOVA Solutions; Paul Serpentini; Sikich LLP, Weidrick, Livesay & Company; Bruce and Elizabeth Fahey; and two significant anonymous gifts.
  • Patrons of the Event were: Donae Ceja, Nancy DiGirolamo, Roger Read, and Linda Shippy.
  • Donors who were unable to attend included: Kittie Clarke, Jerry Egan, R.J. Hemphill, M.D., Susan Kruder, Dan Nelson, Loren and Rebecca Pool, Julia Radwany, M.D., Steven Radwany, M.D., and Mr. & Mrs. James Wilcox.

A delicious dinner was served by Hudson’s Restaurant & Catering featuring an entrée choice of Garlic Smoked Pork Loin or Grilled Salmon.  An intermezzo pasta course following the salad and prior to the entrée has become a Taste of Earth tradition.  This year’s presentation was Cavatappi Pasta aglio olio with summer vegetables from Crown Point.

Crown Point stepped into the 21st Century with electronic auction bidding.  Guests monitored auction bidding and placed their own bids from their personal cell phones (or on I-PADS belonging to IT professionals scattered throughout the group.)  No one had to jump up from dinner to race back to the barn to check bid status.  We now understand why most major non-profit auctions have switched to this approach.

The “Year of Fine Dining” Restaurant Raffle was a hit once again! Twelve Akron/Cleveland area up-scale restaurants each donated a $100 gift certificate, treating the winning bidder to 12 nice dinners.  The restaurants included: Beau’s (Fairlawn Hilton), Bricco (Akron), D’Agnese’s at White Pond, DBA (Downtown Akron), The Diamond Grill (Akron), Fleming’s (Montrose), Flying Fig (Cleveland), Hyde Park (Montrose), Ken Stewart’s Grill (W. Akron), Kingfish (Montrose), Lanning’s (Bath), and Russo’s (Rt. 8 Cuyahoga Falls).

Please mark your calendar for Crown Point’s 20th Taste of Earth gala on August 18, 2018.  It will be a special evening with a theme that celebrates pioneer times in Bath.  The Bath Bi-Centennial is in 2018, and Crown Point was the core of Bath co-founder Jason Hammond’s property. Hammond’s Corners is located at the intersection of Ira Rd. and Cleveland-Massillon Rd.  Mary Anne Krejci, a descendent of an early Bath settler, will co-chair the event with Libby Upton.
