Reconnecting Communities with Nature Through Ancient Wisdom: A Visit to Lippman School

At Crown Point Ecology Center, we believe that building a sustainable future means honoring the knowledge and traditions that have connected humans to the land for generations. We recently had the privilege of bringing this philosophy into the classroom during a presentation at Lippman School.

I presented to a group of about 40 curious eighth-grade students and their adult mentors on a topic we called “Reconnecting Communities with Nature through Ancient Wisdom.” It was an inspiring experience exploring how ancient engineering and traditional plant uses continue to influence modern life. We discussed fascinating examples such as natural building materials, early forms of “green design,” and traditional herbal medicines that have shaped the remedies we use today.

The presentation wasn’t just about history; it was a conversation about why these ancient connections still matter deeply. We talked about the importance of understanding where our food comes from and paying attention to the more-than-human world—the plants, animals, and ecosystems that surround us and sustain life. Most importantly, we honored Indigenous knowledge and practices that have long guided how we care for the Earth, reminding us of our responsibility to be good stewards of the land.

Partnering with Lippman School to engage young people in this way is vital to Crown Point’s mission. We strive to nurture a new generation of environmental stewards who see themselves as part of a larger community—one that includes the soil beneath their feet, the plants they eat, and the waters that flow nearby.

As we move forward, programs like this depend on the generosity of our donors and supporters. Your gifts make it possible for Crown Point to continue offering transformative educational experiences that connect hearts and minds to the natural world. These connections are the seeds of hope for a healthier, more sustainable future for all.

Thank you for standing with Crown Point Ecology Center and helping us grow that hope—one learner, one garden, one community at a time.
